Learner training : Preparation for learner autonomy

Learner training : Preparation for learner autonomy

Abstract

The authors define "learner training" as "teaching the learner how to learn" and propose a model for the systematic implementation of the concept. The expectations brought into the classroom by both teachers and learners are first examined. The role of the teacher in the foreign language classroom is expanded to include helping the students to reflect on the learning process and thereby develop their sense of responsibility for their own progress. The Model itself is based on current research in linguistic and teaching theory. Its three phases are : 1. Induction (activities preparing learners for their course of study) ; 2. Personal Strategies and Language Skills (e.g. self-awareness is related to speaking, reading, etc.) ; 3. Planning for Autonomy (helping the learner to organise a study schedule, etc.). Specific problems in implementation are discussed, and practical examples given. The consequences of this approach on teacher training and on the writing of teaching materials are among the wider implications examined.
