Memoria occidental y memoria amerindia

Abstract

« Mémoire occidentalisée et mémoire amérindienne ». Si l'on admet, avec Halbwachs, que la mémoire est encadrée par chaque société, à travers ses institutions (famille, école, groupes professionnels, religieux ou politiques...), il faut en déduire qu'il existe des différences entre les contenus des mémoires sociales et même entre les structures de la mémoire. Dans le cas de la culture maya, que nous pouvons définir comme métisse, l'étude souligne ses finalités pratiques, indique le moment où elle s'actualise et dans quel but. La tradition orale des Indiens du Chiapas au Mexique comporte des traits comparables à celle des villages du Lac Atitlan au Guatemala ; leur appropriation de l'espace, les légendes relatives à la faune et la flore, les composantes de leur cosmogonie révèlent de nombreux traits de métissage avec la culture hispanique. On voit s'y extérioriser la mémoire mais aussi l'oubli. Les récits conservés et transmis dans le cadre de la famille construisent des stratégies d'existence et de coexistence dont on voit l'influence sur les comportements.
