Abstract

Entre 1866 e 1867 o governo imperial de Dom Pedro II se encontrou com um problema grave no campo de batalha no Paraguai. As tropas do Marechal Francisco Solano Lopez havia mostrado muita mais energia em defender seu pais que os brasileiros haviam esperado e a estrategia militar do Marques de Caxias necessitou alguma inovacao para lancar uma nova campanha para romper o suposto empate e chegar ate Assuncao. Considerando a falta de inteligencia sobre a disposicao do inimigo, os brasileiros optava para usar globos de observacao na frente do Humaita, um experimento nunca contemplado anteriormente na America do Sul. Apesar de que os resultados deste experimento foram variados, o esforco indicava uma inclinacao bastante moderna pela parte dos ministros imperiais, dos oficiais do exercito, e do mesmo imperador.
