Smartphone Applications for Precise Point Positioning

Abstract

C.N.E.S., the French Space Agency, introduces two smartphone applications for Precise Point Positioning. The first application is a converter to RTCM format. It allows to send smartphone measurements (code, phase, Doppler) to a caster in the well-known RTCM standard. By pulling the stream from the caster, users can then re-use all the compatible software for positioning, for example RTKLIB and BNC. The second application is a port of the CNES PPP-wizard user client (presented at ION GNSS+ 2015) on smartphones. The software, thanks to a technique that C.N.E.S has been promoting for many years, namely undifferenced ambiguity resolution, is capable of cm-level positioning accuracy, in PPP mode. In the specific case of the smartphone, such an accuracy can not currently be obtained because of some limitations related to the phase measurement technique, but, with the use of additional techniques like Doppler filtering and SBAS augmentation, sub-meter accuracy can be reached. The study will show some positioning examples in different real time conditions (static, kinematic pedestrian and car), and the achieved accuracy.
