Registration of ‘Badillo’ Light Red Kidney Bean

Abstract

Common bacterial blight (CBB), caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Smith 1897) Vauterin et al. 1995, and Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) pose a threat to common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production throughout the world. ‘Badillo’ (Reg. No. CV‐294, PI 658490), a multiple disease resistant light red kidney bean cultivar adapted to the humid tropics, was developed and released in 2009 cooperatively by the University of Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA–ARS. Badillo carries the resistant allele at the I locus conferring resistance to BCMV and has resistance to CBB carrying the SAP6 SCAR marker linked to a quantitative trait locus for CBB resistance. In field trials conducted in Puerto Rico, Badillo did not show symptoms to endemic races of rust caused by Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger. In five field trials conducted in Puerto Rico, Badillo produced a mean seed yield of 2392 kg ha−1, whereas local check varieties had mean seed yields <2000 kg ha−1 The disease resistance of Badillo should improve yield and seed quality of light red kidney beans produced in the Caribbean. Badillo represents the first release of a light red kidney bean cultivar with enhanced levels of resistance to common bacterial blight.
