This piece aims to give evidence of some ways in which translating theatre from non-canonical languages can contribute to a better understanding of the source culture, its identity, and its traditions, thus resulting in a shift in power from the centre to the periphery. Using examples from Mexican theatre, this article can serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultures through the visual and verbal discourse systems found in theatre.
