Applied theatre is a growing field of theatre practice focused on working in extra-theatrical settings with community participants. The Applied Theatre program at the University of Victoria emerged from the former Theatre/Drama in Education program offered in the Department of Theatre. While the new Applied Theatre program has broader interests than educational applications of theatre, there is a continuing commitment to theatre for social change that can be seen in interviews with eight present and former faculty members and graduate students. Activist pedagogy, in this context, is centred around moving from the classroom studio out into the community.
