This article draws on case studies from the energy transitions to coal, oil, and electricity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America to highlight the importance of attending to the material dimensions of energy systems. The essay argues that a focus on materiality illuminates both the political stakes of energy infrastructure and helps explain the dynamics of energy transitions.
