Abstract

¿Cuál es el origen del floreciente populismo? ¿La desigualdad, el miedo de las clases dominantes a perder sus privilegios, la rabia de los más desfavorecidos ante la ineficacia de los partidos socialdemócratas? En el presente artículo revisaremos estas cuestiones bajo el prisma de la teoría de la Justicia de Rawls. Vivimos un auge de la desigualdad, pero no cualquier desigualdad: una desigualdad en la que los favorecidos miran por encima del hombro a los menos favorecidos, y no dudan en decirles: “es mi mérito estar donde estoy, si deseas progresar solo tienes que esforzarte como yo lo he hecho”. Esta soberbia meritocrática merece una respuesta, por ejemplo, eliminar o decrementar el valor del mérito. Pero decrementarlo en exceso puede conducirnos a sociedades mediocres, sin suficiente capacidad de innovación.Entonces, ¿hasta qué punto permitir la desigualdad? Hasta el punto “D” de Rawls, aquel en queesta desigualdad deja de tener un retorno positivo para los más desfavorecidos. Este punto “D”no debería cruzarse, pues los daños morales que provoca la tiranía del mérito pueden tenergraves efectos sobre la cohesión social.
