Abstract

Las sociedades de las montañas de Albania del Norte fueron las últimas sin Estado de Europa, hasta principios del siglo xx. Eran principalmente católicas, regidas por un derecho consuetudinario ( el kan un), y cada una poseía una leyenda propia de fundación. El desfase que existía entre la leyenda yel kanun era favorable a este. Las intentos de las potencias exteriores para penetrar en esas sociedades, del siglo XVI al siglo XIX, tuvieron éxitos variables: el Papado no consiguió evitar una larga penetración del dogma católico por el kanun, y el Imperio Otomano consiguió solamente en parte jugar el papel de árbitro en los conflictos generados por la vendetta. Aprovechando precisamente el declive Otomano en el siglo XIX, una dinastía local intento establecer un Estado católico en una de las comarcas tribales. El artículo termina mostrando el interés que tendría un estudio sintético sobre las sociedades sin Estado en Europa, desde la Edad Media al periodo contemporáneo.
