Pengaruh Self-control terhadap Perilaku Merokok Remaja

Abstract

Abstract. The increasing number of adolescent smokers each year has made Indonesia one of the countries with a high adolescent smoking population (Syakriah, 2022). This study aims to examine the effect of self-control on adolescent smoking behavior. The approach used in this study is a quantitative correlational design. The sample consisted of 126 junior high school students in Sukabumi selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires measuring self-control and smoking behavior. This study used a self-control measurement tool developed by Tondok based on Averill's theory, while smoking behavior was measured using a tool developed by Hamdan based on Aritonang's aspects. Statistical analysis using SPSS confirmed that self-control has a significant influence on adolescent smoking behavior (significance level < .001). Self-control contributes 79.3% to smoking behavior. Adolescents with high self-control tend to have lower smoking behavior compared to those with low self-control. These findings are consistent with self-control theory, which explains the role of self-control in restraining individuals from making harmful impulsive decisions, thereby enabling adolescents to better resist social pressure to smoke. However, other influences such as peers and family environment also warrant further study, given that self-control does not contribute 100% to adolescent smoking behavior.
