This article investigates the contribution of higher education to intergenerational social mobility. Starting from the scheme proposed by Erikson, Goldthorpe and Portocarrero, the class position of a representative sample of the pea of Montevideo, for the year 2010, is compared with its social position at the origin. The population is divided between those who have tertiary education and those who do not, and the effect of this on social mobility is analyzed. The data allow to affirm that there is indeed a substantive contribution of higher education in class retention and in upward social mobility.
