By analyzing Mercè López’s visual adaptation of Romeo and Juliet (2018), this paper discusses contemporary perspectives on the relation between written text and images. Elleström’s concept of “media modalities” is the basis for the analysis of the transposition of a verbal narrative into an imagetic one, the insertion of another media via medial transposition (RAJEWSKY, 2012) and the importance of visual literacy. It is argued that the new imagetic product recreates the verbal by activating the reader’s encyclopedic knowledge and cultural context.
