THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND CLERGY DURING THE CIVIL WAR

Abstract

The article presents an overview of the events of 1918-1922, which charac-terize the state of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and the survival strategy of the Orthodox clergy in the conditions of Civil War. Due to the territorial disintegration of the empire, the ROC was on the verge of losing canonical hierarchical governance. How the Soviet government and the Orthodox Church interacted, what changes took place inside this once «ideological» institution on the territory of the «whites», how the «Orthodox world», divided into «reds» and «whites» influenced the events - these issues are covered in this article. The processes of self-determination in the «Orthodox world» are analyzed on the basis of a wide range of sources that convince that the nature of the «stratification» of the clergy, the ideological transformations of the Orthodox flock were hidden not only in relation to the «red» or «white», but also determined by the attitude to the canonical foundations of Orthodoxy, the search for «new religiosity», religious the policy of the Soviet government.
