Abstract

Este trabajo cuestiona ciertas definiciones y categorías críticas que podrían reducir la novela Sab (1841) a una serie de tópicos. Entre las características propias de una corriente y la singularidad, entre la tradición y la modernidad, Sab no es solo una novela de amor que exalta las emociones de los personajes y se nutre de los tópicos del romanticismo sentimental para glorificar el alma sensible de un esclavo rehabilitado desde una mirada universal (y ajena al mundo de las poblaciones negras), convertido en arquetipo fuera de todo contexto concreto. Si bien la obra responde en gran medida a los patrones europeos y se inspira en varias tradiciones literarias, conviene tener en cuenta los elementos dispersos de una escritura romántica multifacética. El texto y su ambivalente dispositivo narrativo también son una memoria de los cambios políticos, económicos y sociales de la Cuba de principios del siglo XIX y una reescritura, bajo una nueva luz, de la historia colonial.
