Deep water - deep doubts

Abstract

The mutual relationship between humans and their environment is evident. This is particularly true in the construction of infrastructures that rely on their immediate surroundings, often causing harm and thus generating controversy. However, to what extent do political protests against infrastructures reflect the intricate interdependencies between humans and the environment? It is hypothesized that the fluid properties of water can help to decipher the complex interplay between infrastructure projects and political activists. In the context of the deepening of the Elbe River in Germany, the thesis analyzes the role of maritime infrastructure projects in shaping political activists and vice versa. It explores whether the maritime context can provide a more comprehensive understanding of the interdependencies between the two. Using an interdisciplinary approach that integrates perspectives from phenomenological anthropology, political ecology, environmental history, and actor-network theory, an attempt will be made to reveal the interwoven rhythms of human activities and natural processes along the course of the river. The focus of this work is to investigate local activism and its relationship to a maritime infrastructure project, to clarify the socio-political effects of hydraulic engineering projects. This will shed light on the dynamics of affect in political engagement, as well as the interconnected relationships between people, water, and landscape.
