Arbeiten mit Modellen im Chemieanfangsunterricht

Abstract

The topic of atomic models is a fundamental part of basic chemistry education. Communicating the abstractness of a model in an understandable way to students in secondary school is a challenge that is often not obvious at first sight - even to chemistry teachers. Due to the growing educational focus on developing competences, the enhancement of model comprehension in teaching about atomic models is increasingly becoming important. The aim of this Master Thesis is to determine the difficulties students have with models in beginning chemistry class and further to develop a teaching concept to support model competence applied on the topic of atomic models. This paper is trying to answer the central question of how the students' model competence can be enhanced at the beginning of chemistry class. On the one hand, an understanding of models should be emphasized by teaching the historical development of the atomic model, on the other hand different forms of illustrations are meant to help students develop a better understanding of models. To answer the research question, the pupils' difficulties with models were asked by using a questionnaire and the evaluated results were utilized to design a possible teaching concept for the atomic models. The results of the students' questionnaire suggest that especially the concept of models and the change between real world experiences and the world of models could be dealt with more specifically in class. Likewise, a basic understanding of scientific research methods supports the comprehensibility of the development of models. In the teaching concept presented on the topic of atomic models, model competence should be strengthened especially through constructivist forms of teaching. A black box experiment at the beginning of this series of lessons is intended to sensitize the students to the connection between the characteristics of the model and those of reality and to support them in understanding abstract thought patterns.
