Empowerment through economic measures?

Abstract

The present thesis discusses the implications of women’s economic empowerment initiatives in the rural town Sayausí, in the province of Azuay, Ecuador, by the example of the local organization Kallpa Warmi. Through the examination of the individual experiences of participants in the local project, in connection to the analysis of the theory of empowerment, economic empowerment and concepts related to them, such as power and agency, the paper tries to offer an understanding of necessities for educational and labor market projects to contribute to empowerment, as well as to explain how the concept of empowerment can be more tangible.
