Die vorliegende Masterarbeit behandelt die Übersetzbarkeit von Kunstwerken. Konkret soll geklärt werden, ob es möglich ist, Kunstwerke einer Kunstform in eine beliebige andere Kunstform zu übersetzen. Dazu gilt es vor allem die Translation und den Translationsprozess sowie das Wesen der Kunst und den Umgang mit Kunstwerken genau zu ergründen. Besonderes Augenmerk wird bei der Betrachtung von Kunst darauf gelegt, worin die Unterschiede und vor allem auch worin die Gemeinsamkeiten verschiedener Kunstformen liegen, da diese für eine Translation von entscheidender Bedeutung sind. Schließlich wird die Kunstkritik als literarische Gattung – vornehmlich aus dem späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert – dahingehend untersucht, ob sie als eine Realisierung der genannten Art der Übersetzung verstanden werden kann. Ob sie also als eine Translation des von ihr behandelten Werks betrachtet werden kann. Wenn das der Fall ist, ist derselbe Text je nach Perspektive ein Kunstwerk, eine Translation und eine Kunstkritik.

This master’s thesis deals with the general translatability of works of art. The aim is to theoretically elaborate whether it is possible to translate a piece of art of one kind into another art form. Therefore, an examination of translation in general and the process of translating in particular as well as the essence of art and the use and function of art are crucial for this thesis. Special attention is paid to the differences and similarities between art forms, as they are considered to be of essential significance when it comes to translation. Finally, it will be examined whether art criticism as a literary genre – especially from the end of the 17th and the beginning 18th centuries – can be seen as a translation of the artwork in question and whether it can be seen as art itself. If both is the case, one single text is an artwork, a translation and a critique.
