This diploma thesis examines the opening credits of the series “True Blood” in a formal way and interprets them afterwards.The first part of the thesis deals intensively with the creation of a scientific basis for analysis.To start with, several analytical levels of the movie are explained, ranging from the aesthetic composition to the cinematic narration. In order to interpret the opening credits it is important to obtain a well-grounded basic knowledge as to how the recipient perceives the emotions. How do certain emotions arise during the reception and how can these be created? Furthermore, there is the definition of what the concept of “image” means. A short excursion into the field of film semiotics topps off the theoretical basis. Film-theoretic analysis methods are explained in detail and these provide a set of instruments for subsequent analysis in the second part of the thesis. To interpret and analyse opening credits, it is necessary to research their story. In the case of the Blue Blood opening credits, their creator Digital Kitchen is introduced. In order to reach an analysis in the second part of the thesis, it is necessary to dismantle the opening credits image by image and put the individual sequences in relation. The montage creates meaning and is further examined. Each viewer interprets the images differently according to his or her experiences. That’s why irrefutable statements cannot be made at the end. I attempt to make a beginning in this thesis and take the reader to the limits of interpretation.

In dieser Diplomarbeit wird der Vorspann der Serie True Blood formal untersucht und anschließend interpretiert. Der erste Teil der Arbeit widmet sich intensiv der Kreation einer wissenschaftlichen Analysegrundlage. Zunächst werden verschiedene Analyseebenen des Filmes erläutert, die sich über die ästhetische Gestaltung, hin zum filmischen Erzählen ziehen. Für die Interpretation des Vorspannes ist es wichtig, ein fundiertes Basiswissen zur emotionalen Wahrnehmung der Rezipienten zu erwerben. Wie kommen bei der Rezeption bestimmte Gefühle auf, beziehungsweise wie werden diese erzeugt? Des Weiteren wird definiert, was die Begrifflichkeit „Bild“ bedeutet. Eine kurze Exkursion in die Filmsemiotik rundet die theoretische Grundlage ab. Durch die genaue Erläuterung filmtheoretischer Analysemethoden wird ein Instrumentarium zur späteren Analyse im zweiten Teil geschaffen. Um Vorspänne interpretieren und analysieren zu können, bedarf es einer Erforschung ihrer Geschichte. Im Falle des True Blood Vorspannes werden auch die Erschaffer Digital Kitchen vorgestellt. Um im zweiten Teil der Arbeit zu einer Analyse zu gelangen, muss der Vorspann Bild für Bild zerlegt und seine einzelnen Sequenzen in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Montage erschafft Bedeutung und wird genauer beleuchtet. Die Interpretation von Bildern variiert je nach Erfahrungshorizont des Betrachters, unwiderlegbare Aussagen können also nicht final getätigt werden. Ich wage in dieser Arbeit einen Anfang und begebe mich mit dem Leser an die Grenzen der Interpretation.
