Nachhaltigkeit in der Jugendkultur

Abstract

The diploma thesis “sustainability in youth culture” deals with the identification of aspects relevant to sustainability in the lives of today’s urban and rural youth. An aim is to reveal aspects relevant to youth culture and sustainability to then connect these findings to concepts of sustainability and sustainable development in general. Quantitative data was acquired via questionnaires, 101 of which were handed out and answered at a private school as compared to 138 at a public school. Qualitative methods include a “world café” and an “image journey” amongst several other participative methods that prompted students to share details about their lives without explicit knowledge of the research theme. Assessment of this collective data unravels specific habits and mindsets in youth cultures that are closely related to the subject of sustainability. For instance, data correlates private school students with a pronounced awareness to sustainable behavior in terms of consumption and mobility, especially amongst students who are confronted with these subjects at home. One of the conclusions drawn is that today´s youth would very much like to see themselves as individuals acting towards a more sustainable present and thus future, but perceive a lack of options to put their ideas into action. The research shows that young people want to partake in decision making processes, that their dedication to sustainability is not determined by their knowledge about it and that they want to be given opportunities to become active in shaping the future for the better.
