Im Fokus der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit steht die Betrachtung von Schnittflächen zwischen Bewegung und Bedeutung im Tanz. Anhand von Beispielen aus ghanaischen Tanztraditionen wird untersucht, in welchen Aspekten eines Tanzereignisses „Bedeutung“ implizit oder explizit vermittelt werden kann und wie diese Ausdrucksformen im ghanaischen Kontext zum Einsatz kommen. Die auf strukturalistische tanzethnologische Ansätze gestützte Annahme, dass sich kulturelle Ordnungsprinzipien, Vorstellungen und Werte in den Tänzen einer Region widerspiegeln sowie dass von diesen umgekehrt wieder auf die zugrundeliegende kulturelle Logik geschlossen werden kann, wird exemplarisch anhand zweier traditioneller Tänze der Akan und der Anlo Ewe in der jeweiligen Bühnenversion des Kusum Gboo Dance Ensembles aus Accra/Ghana überprüft. Die Untersuchung der Bedeutung von symbolischen Tanzbewegungen im Kete der Akan stützt sich auf Befragungen ghanaischer Informanten. Zur Entschlüsselung der möglichen Bedeutungen eines ausgewählten Tanzmotivs aus dem Anlo Kete, das sich als Identifikationsmerkmal der Anlo Ewe erwies, werden im Zuge einer bewegungsanalytischen Betrachtung herausgearbeitete Bewegungscharakteristika mit Aspekten der kulturellen Logik der Anlo Ewe in Beziehung gebracht. Die Analyse erfolgt auf der Basis von Filmmaterial, das während der Feldforschungen der Autorin in Ghana und den Niederlanden entstand. Unterstützend zum abgedruckten Bildmaterial liegen die behandelten Videoausschnitte dieser Diplomarbeit in Form einer DVD bei.

The present diploma thesis focuses on the intersection between movement and meaning in dance and explores through which aspects of dance-events meaning can be implicitly or explicitly conveyed. The study of dance in the ghanaian context reveals which of these modalities of communication are used by ghanaian dance traditions. The assumption – supported by structuralist approaches of dance anthropology – that cultural patterns, values and beliefs are reflected in the dances of a region and that those in turn can be taken as indicators for the underlying cultural logic, is examined on basis of two traditional dances of the Akan and the Anlo Ewe people performed by the Kusum Gboo Dance Ensemble of Accra/Ghana. The meaning of symbolic dance-movements in the Kete of the Akan is laid open by results of interviews with ghanaian informants. For decoding the meaning of a selected dance-motif appearing in the Anlo Kete, considered as “identity marker” of the Anlo Ewe, the characteristic traits of that movement-sequence are hypothetically related to certain aspects of the cultural logic of the Anlo Ewe. The movement-analysis is conducted on basis of video-material taken during the author's field research in Ghana and the Netherlands. In addition to illustrations a DVD containing the respective video-sections is provided with the thesis.
