La guerra de Canudos en revistas brasileñas publicadas en Europa

Abstract

La guerra de Canudos se desarrolló a finales del siglo XIX en un momento histórico en el que coincidieron la inserción de la joven República brasileña en el mercado económico mundial y la expansión de la prensa periódica. La guerra, en tanto acontecimiento discursivo, adquirió una gran relevancia gracias a los avances tecnológicos que contribuyeron a mundializar la prensa. Al calor de los enfrentamientos se gestaron publicaciones internacionales como la Revue du Brésil (Paris, 1896-1898) y la Revista Moderna (París, 1897), entre otras. Estas revistas, en tanto dispositivos, operaron como mediadoras de productos simbólicos y culturales brasileños en París, capital de la cultura occidental. El presente análisis toma por caso la Revue du Brésil y propone señalar que Canudos, como ha sido analizado por buena parte de la crítica, no estaba al margen de la República del Brasil. Por el contrario, las reescrituras internacionales del acontecimiento fueron centrales para la conformación del régimen republicano dentro del orden mundial moderno. En esta escala la guerra puede repensarse como un conflicto regido por mediaciones escritas.
