Tras la pista de Darwin. El problema de la fauna americana en las crónicas de José de Acosta y Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo

Abstract

El presente texto contiene una serie de pautas y consideraciones sobre la reflexión que el fósil y la fauna americana suscitaron en los primeros cronistas de Indias. No se trata tanto de un bosquejo descriptivo para visibilizar un asunto por lo general desatendido, como de una lectura interpretativa sobre los aportes y las claves que la crónica legó en el ámbito de la teoría de la tierra y de la vida. Las crónicas de Oviedo y Acosta se oponen en varios sentidos en la forma de conceptualizar esta problemática: la primera se resigna a prorrogar el modelo escolástico, no sin interrogar sus limitaciones, la segunda presagia formalmente el evolucionismo. Trataré de repensar dichos modelos a la luz de la revolución darwiniana.
