Abstract

This investigation focuses on the temporary immigration of young foreigners coming to study in Brazil, at military higher education institutions, in this case specifically at the Naval Academy (aka EN), the organization that graduates Brazilian Navy officers. The methodology is qualitative in its nature, continuous, and progressing crosswise, including an initial documental and exploratory research, using –as one of the data gathering instruments – a questionnaire with both open and close-ended questions posed to the subjects under study, eight youngsters, their average age being 22 years, from countries in Africa (Namibia, Nigeria, and Senegal) and Asia (Lebanon) in the class of 2013. These youngsters had been through a selection process in their respective countries of origin and, before officially joining the EN regular course, they first took the “Qualification Internship for Academic Integration of Foreign Students”. There were also semi-structured interviews with the math teacher and the follow-through report was read by the Portuguese language teacher. The internship comprises a period focused on learning the Portuguese language and basic catching up in Math and Physics, pursuant to the prerequisites for admission to the Institution. The scope of this study includes drawing a profile of the students that, in 2013, are taking the aforementioned Internship, highlighting their key features, the hurdles faced in this first stage, and their expectations for the future. From the answers to the questionnaire, it was possible to detect the following initial afflictions: that learning the Portuguese language causes major apprehension; and the fear of repetition or failure. The internship in itself is a good way to onboard foreign students, integrating them, and getting them adapted, particularly to Brazilian culture. It is important to acknowledge and value these students’ cultural and idiomatic diversity, respecting differences, their ethnical identity, and their systems of values and beliefs.
