Abstract

*The study of aeronautical engineering at Mississippi State University began in 1933. This paper traces this history of the Department from its founding through the war years, the boom years in the 1950s and 1960s, the downturn of the 1970s, and the recovery in the 1980s. This paper describes the origins of the Raspet Flight Research Laboratory, the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Computational Field Simulation, and the Diagnostic Instrumentation and Analysis Laboratory. The history of the world’s first all-composite aircraft, the MARVEL, is also discussed.
