Warp drives have been used in popular fiction to describe vehicles that can travel at velocities beyond the speed of light. The science behind such devices is well established and can be used to determine how such devices might operate and can provide an estimate of when, if ever, such devices could be constructed. The Theory of General Relativity forms the basis for the concept of warp drives and can be used to proceed in a formal manner from the Schwarzschild solution for black holes, to Kip Thorne’s concept for wormholes and on to Alcubierre’s recent solution that is a fully functional warp drive. The physical and technical aspects associated with Alcubierre’s warp drive solution are presented, and it is shown that the energy requirements are well beyond current technology.
