Usando la categoría de bandolero social, acuñada por Hobsbawn (1983) en su memorable texto Rebeldes primitivos, y explorando el acervo documental del Archivo Germán Guzmán Campos, este libro analiza el bandolerismo en Colombia durante la llamada Violencia tardía, aquel triste periodo de la historia nacional comprendido entre los años 1958 (inicio del Frente Nacional) y 1965 (muerte de Efraín González, el principal bandido conservador, apodado el Siete Colores). Se analizan las características sociológicas más sobresalientes de este fenómeno, el carácter y número de las cuadrillas y su filiación política, la participación en ellas de la mujer bandolera, la vida cotidiana en estas estructuras armadas, el desafío al Estado colombiano, y cómo cientos de bandoleros, que integraban más de 120 bandas, murieron en los enfrentamientos con el Ejército y la Policía. Lo anterior se ejemplifica con la reconstrucción de las trayectorias vitales de los tres principales bandidos liberales: Sangre Negra, Desquite y Chispas.
