Abstract

O artigo investiga uma possível genealogia do uso do sistema gradeado de imagens feito por artistas desde os anos 1990. Desenvolvida pelo pensamento visual clássico, a grade de representação do visível sofre transformações até que artistas pós-cubistas desenvolvem um quadro modular abstrato, ao qual Mondrian renunciará, a partir de certo momento de sua trajetória, em favor do quadro-diagrama. Essa história linear é, contudo, ainda mais complexa, com outros desvios críticos Entre os artistas das vanguardas históricas – do construtivismo ao surrealismo –, surgem modalidades de quadros múltiplos realizados pela montagem de imagens fotográficas. Nos anos 1960/1970, o quadro múltiplo ressurge na Pop Art, sendo transformado pela Arte Conceitual e pela geração do final do século XX. Insisto no termo grade para não acolher ideias de rupturas históricas definitivas, mas tampouco defendo ideias de evolução.
