Abstract

As expressões rupestres agrupadas sob a Tradição São Francisco e o Complexo Montalvânia (tal como se apresentam no norte de Minas Gerais e sudoeste da Bahia) são geralmente atribuídas a distintas comunidades culturais. Este artigo trata das similaridades e contrastes entre estas representações em seus aspectos temporal (cronologias relativa e absoluta), técnico-gráfico (técnicas, temas, cores, associações entre figuras, etc.) e espacial (ocupação dos suportes e dos abrigos regionais). O objetivo desse artigo é discutir se a variação estilística regional poderia estar mais relacionada às finalidades comunicativas da prática rupestre para seus grupos de autores do que a “estranhamentos culturais” entre essas pessoas. A arte rupestre de um abrigo rochoso do norte de Minas Gerais é utilizada para exemplificar os diferentes contextos de produção e consumo e distintos auditórios dos estilos São Francisco e Montalvânia. Esse caso é examinado para discutir como a problematização de distintos públicos-alvos dos discursos veiculados através da arte rupestre pode nos ajudar a melhor compreender a diversidade desse registro arqueológico.
