Abstract

Des dels primers assajos dels germans Wright fins als actuals vols suborbitals, els dos problemes principals per al progrés de l'aviació han estat la potència disponible i els materials emprats per construir les cel·les. Aquest segon punt significa que, en últim terme, la química ha estat majoritàriament responsable de molts avenços en el camp, i la part corresponent a la química macromolecular (fins i tot quan encara no s'havia inventat el terme) és d'allò més rellevant. En aquest article hem provat de resumir el paper que els materials polimèrics han desenvolupat en aquest progrés, començant pels simples revestiments fins a arribar a l'ús dels compòsits per elements estructurals fonamentals, i hi hem introduït algunes reflexions finals sobre el molt que encara resta per fer.

From the first experimental flying machines of the Wright brothers to the actual suborbital flights, the two key problems in the progress of aviation have been the available power and the materials used to build the cells. This second point implies that chemistry, and in particular macromolecular chemistry, has played a prominent role in many of the fundamental advances in this field. In this article we will review this progress from the first wing coatings to the state of the art composite materials for structural applications in aircrafts, introducing some final reflections about the large amount of work that is still pending in this field.
