Copula Absence in Samana English: Implications for Research on the Linguistic History of African-American Vernacular English

Abstract

L'A. examine les deux hypotheses concurrentes avancees pour expliquer le developpement historique de l'anglais vernaculaire afro-americain (AAVE), l'hypothese dialectologiste et l'hypothese creoliste, et presente de nouvelles donnees provenant de l'anglais parle a Samana, en Republique Dominicaine, afin d'evaluer ces deux hypotheses. Il propose notamment une analyse quantitative et qualitative de l'absence de copule dans cette variete et observe une variabilite dans l'usage de la copule qui semble etre le resultat d'une creolisation anterieure, contrairement a ce qu'ont pu demontrer les etudes precedentes. Dans la mesure ou l'anglais de Samana represente un ancetre relativement pur de l'AAVE, il peut etre raisonnablement conclu que l'histoire de cette variete peut avoir inclus une creolisation anterieure
