THE COGNITIVE ABILITIES of concrete operational and formal operational thinkers, as defined by the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, have received a great deal of attention in recent years. This article briefly describes the stages involved in Piaget's model and reviews the current literature as it applies to Piaget's ideas and specifically to students of college age. The implications of the research for the teaching of a nonmajor's college biology course are presented with the evaluation of a biology textbook's cognitive requirements.
