In 1959, Cummins suggested that four species assigned to Puccinia probably belonged in Sorataea. Hiratsuka and Cummins (1963) referred again to these species and, further, reported subcuticular, type 7 spermogonia in Puccinia baphiae V.-Bourg. and P. ostryoderridis Joerst., but they made no transfers. Savile (1971) did transfer P. baphiae to Sorataea but refrained from transferring P. ostryoderridis because paraphyses were not mentioned in the diagnosis. We consider the presence or absence of paraphyses to be much less significant than the spermogonia. The spermogonia of Sorataea were not described by Sydow (1930) but were by Jackson (1931) when he described the genus Allopuccinia, the latter reduced to the synonymy of Sorataea by Thirumalachar and Cummins (1948). Following are the species of Sorataea, all of which occur on Leguminosae.
