Temperature Inversion and Vegetation Inversion in Xishuangbanna, Southwestern Yunnan, People's Republic of China

Abstract

This paper describes the relationships between temperature inversions during winter months and vegetation distribution in Xishuangbanna, southwestern Yunnan Province. Temperature inversions are differentiated according to scale. Thus, macroinversions of several hundred metres, especially on north-facing slopes, produce a pronounced inversion of "normal" mountain vegetational belts. Micro-inversions, restricted to 40 cm above the ground surface, cause significant damage to agricultural plants. Climatic and vegetation data are compared and the winter synoptic climatology of South China and Yunnan is discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Temperaturund Vegetationsinversion in Xishuangbanna, Siidwestyunnan, Volksrepublik China.
