Ionizing radiation can induce bacterial spores to undergo changes associated with germination. By using low-energy electrons it was possible to separate two regions of the spore radiosensitive with respect to loss of optical density. These two regions coincide with two regions radiosensitive with respect to loss of viability. The region deep within the spore is particularly sensitive to loss of viability, while that region near the surface is particularly sensitive to loss of optical density.
