The Question of the Question

Abstract

One of the secrets of good teaching is the right question, asked at the right moment in the right form. Just what is the right question? Quite a few factors would have to be enumerated if we were to discuss this problem from a general didactic point of view. Rather let us examine this question of the question from a practical methodological point of view as applicable to the discussion of literary reading matter on the intermediate level. I will first list fifteen possible kinds of questions with their advantages and disadvantages. After this I will show how the discussion in class can be determined by the right question, and whether the questions selected by the teacher are appropriate or not. For this purpose I will briefly analyze a few possible questions for Borchert's "Die Kiichenuhr."
