Abstract

First, I would like to specify that by "Chicana," I am referring to a woman of Mexican heritage who is living in the United States. This broad definition encompasses women from rural as well as urban settings, with many possible differences. The Chicana, as seen in her literature, however, appears to perceive herself as a marginal figure in her world. As a beginning, I would like to quote from a poem by a Chicana, Mary Ann Montafiez (San Jose):
