importance of the kind of education it provides. "If one believes that art is indispensable as a psychological and, indeed, as a biological condition of human existence, it must be assumed to grow from the very roots of our being."2 Art, he believes, is born from man's need to understand himself and the world in which he lives. It is one of the principal means by which the human mind orients itself in the environment of its life space, a basic instrument in man's struggle for survival. Art makes images through which the nature and functioning of things can be experienced, helping us to understand the things we see by interpreting their structure. Through art we are able to discover order, law, and necessity in the seemingly irrational world of our experience. "No responsible educator or student should be expected to spend time and money on art so long as beauty is spoken of as something that 'pleases without interest.' It [is] necessary to revive in our minds the awareness of the vital functions the arts fulfill."3
