A new genus and species of bat flea is described from the Himalayas of Nepal. Its affin- ities with related genera belonging to the subfamily Ischnopsyllinae are discussed. Records of the oc- currence of other fleas of this family from Nepal are reviewed. In view of the active interest in bats main- tained by most mammalogists, one would assume that at least the major taxa of ecto- parasites of these peculiar mammals would be known by now. It was, therefore, with con- siderable surprise that a single female of an undescribed genus of bat flea was collected during an ectoparasite survey presently under way in Nepal. Although it is generally considered inadvis- able to describe species from a single speci- men, the fact that few bats have been en- countered in the country, coupled with the hardships associated with travel there, renders it highly improbable that additional material of this interesting taxon will soon come to hand. For these reasons, the new genus and species are described below.
