Lai and on originally are local adverbs, the former having a demonstrative character, the latter a relative one. Both are also used with a temporal meaning. The present paper is not supposed to give an exhaustive survey of the manifold meanings the two little words, single or combined, may adopt; it only is meant to elucidate some of the meanings which are insufficiently dealt with, or not at all, in the Proven~al dictionaries.
