Hybridization Among Three Species of Andropogon (Poaceae: Andropogoneae) in Southern Brazil

Abstract

Hybridization among three species of Andropogon (Poaceae: Andropogoneae) in southern Brazil. Bull. Torrey Bot. Club 114:402-406. 1987. -Andropogon arenarius, A. bicornis, and A. lateralis grow together in southern Brazil along with individuals that are morphologically intermediate between all pairs of these three species. We observed only three such putative F, individuals for A. arenarius and A. bicornis and one for A. bicornis and A. lateralis. Morphological intermediates between A. arenarius and A. lateralis correspond to A. lindman/i and numbered about 390 plants in our field studies. Canonical discriminant analysis of the putative parents and individuals of A. lindmanii underscores the morphological intermediacy of the latter. Almost all putative hybrid individuals were large and apparently relatively old. The small number of immature plants indicates rare reproduction and suggests sterility. On the other hand, meiosis appears to be normal, and pollen stainability is high (86%) in A. lindmanii.
