In 1936, Mr. E. P. Killip and I published "A Revision of the Mexican anld Central American Species of Smilax."I My study of material received since that time has resulted in a few changes and additions that are here proposed. The "sectional" names used below are not validly published in our earlier treatment, since they lack Latin diagnoses. They are probably not taxonomically significant either, since no special account was taken of the species of the genus as a whole; they were proposed merely as a usable grouping of the species being treated, to order them and simplify the key, but the characters used were probably mostly artificial. Since 1936, I have published one new species, S. chiriquensig,2 and an account of the Panamanian species.3 Standley described a plant of Panama as S. catocardia,4 which I consider a synonym of S. subpubescens A. DC. Otherwise, the only work on the genus in Mexico or Central America has been the description of two new species from Chiapas by C. L. Lundell; these are mentioned below. A new key to the Mexican species has been prepared.
