Systematic sampling over irregular areas has been considered in forestry by Schumacher and Chapman [1942] and their method rejected on practical grounds by Finney [1948]. An application of systematic sampling with probabilities proportional to sizes (p. p. s.) proposed by Madow [1949] is given. Comparisons with systematic sampling non p. p. s., with biased and unbiased estimates, and stratified sampling, p. p. s. and non p. p. s., with selection of one unit per stratum are made.
