Doctoral study in insurance is a topic on which virtually each college teacher, in a "micro" sense, can consider himself with good reason an expert. In a "macro" sense, however, the subject becomes a bit awkward to comprehend. The nature and extent of doctoral study in insurance during recent decades in the United States is not easily ascertained and described. Prognostications about the future are highly speculative at best. This paper consists of (1) a general comment about doctoral study in business, (2) a description of the extent of doctoral study in insurance, and (3) a speculation about what might lie ahead. Since doctoral study generally and insurance doctoral study particularly possess so many variations and dimensions, any description of what is and any surmise of what may be are bound to be sketchy.
