On Modular Structures on the Moon

Abstract

Recent achievements of exploring the Moon with automatic devices and with men bring to the fore the question of constructing temporary facilities for men to live and work there for periods of several months [1-5]. It can be expected that sometime in the future permanent bases utilizing human resources will be built and that even special kinds of industry will be established to take advantage of the unusual physical conditions on this satellite [6, 7]. If population is not controlled on the Earth, man may be forced to make use of the lunar surface even if expensive methods of planetary engineering would have to be applied. We shall discuss, in a preliminary way, concepts and methods of building permanent bases. The following assumptions are made: 1. Regular transport of passengers and freight between the Earth and the Moon is available. 2. Power sources have been provided on the Moon. 3. The necessary materials and equipment are available for constructing buildings on the Moon.
