The carangid genus Scomberoides, restricted to the tropical and subtropical waters of the IndoWest Pacific and central Pacific, constitutes the subfamily Scomberoidinae with two other genera (Nelson, 1994), Oligoplites (eastern Pacific and western Atlantic) and Parona (southwestern Atlantic). Scomberoides comprises four speciesS. commersonnianus, S. tala, S. lysan, and S. tolaccording to the revision of Smith-Vaniz and Staiger (1973), all four being very easily identified by characteristic black markings laterally on the body in adults. In addition, S. tol has unique needlelike scales, whereas three other species have oval or lanceolate scales (Smith-Vaniz and Staiger, 1973; Smith-Vaniz, 1986).
