The taxonomy of Taxidea taxus is reviewed based on a study of approximately 1000 specimens. Four Recent subspecies are recognized. Their distributions are mapped. Clinal variation in T. t. taxus is discussed. Synonymies are provided, and comments on sexual dimorphism, individual variation, nomenclature, type-localities, speciation, and zoogeography are included.
