From February through August, 1969, I was at the Institute for Oceanography and Fisheries in Split, Yugoslavia, on an exchange visit sponsored by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Council of the Yugolsav Academies of Science and Art. The objective of my research, developed in response to a need described in the Yugolsav and FAO literature, was to evaluate the suitability of several methods of tagging sardines-the principal species in the Yugolsav fishery in the Adriatic Sea.
