Letters from Shklovsky's "Zoo"

Abstract

I'm not going to write about love. I'm going to write only about the weather. The weather in Berlin is nice today. The sky is blue, the sun higher than the houses. The sun looks right into Pension Marzahn, into Aikhenvald's room.2 I live on the other side of the apartment building. Out on the street, it's nice and cool. There was almost no snow in Berlin this year. Today is February 5 . . . I'm still writing not about love. I'm wearing a fall coat, but if it turned freezing cold, I would have to call it a winter coat. I don't like the weather to be freezing or even cold. Because of the cold, the Apostle Peter denied Christ. The night was cool and he walked up to the fire, but at the fire sat public opinion: the servants kept questioning Peter about Christ and Peter kept denying Him.
